Crown Treatment

Dental crowns, also known as caps, are prosthetic restorations that cover the entire visible portion of a tooth above the gumline. They are used to restore the shape, size, strength, and appearance of damaged, weakened, or aesthetically compromised teeth. Dental crowns can be made from various materials, each offering different advantages and characteristics.

Porcelain Fused to Metal (PFM) Crowns

These crowns have a metal base (usually made of gold, nickel, or chromium) that is covered with layers of porcelain to achieve a natural tooth color and translucency. PFM crowns combine the strength of metal with the aesthetic appeal of porcelain, making them a popular choice for both front and back teeth.

All-Ceramic or All-Porcelain Crowns

These crowns are made entirely of ceramic or porcelain material, without any metal components. They are known for their excellent aesthetics, as they closely mimic the appearance of natural teeth in terms of color and translucency. All-ceramic crowns are a preferred option for front teeth due to their lifelike appearance.

Metal Crowns

These crowns are made of various metal alloys such as gold, palladium, or chromium. Metal crowns are highly durable and resistant to wear, making them suitable for molars and teeth that undergo heavy chewing forces. However, their metallic appearance may not be ideal for visible front teeth.

Zirconia Crowns

Zirconia is a strong and durable material that can be used to create full-contour crowns without the need for a metal substructure. Zirconia crowns offer excellent strength, aesthetics, and biocompatibility, making them a versatile choice for both front and back teeth.

The type of dental crown recommended will depend on factors such as the location of the tooth, the patient’s oral health needs, aesthetic preferences, and budget. Your dentist will evaluate your specific situation and discuss the best crown option for you.
